Here are five refreshing trends for fashion loving girls to revamp your summer wardrobe with old summer favourites in Spring/Summer '09. So, turn yourself from recessionista to fashionista and scoop up the right look to create an engrossing style statement:
The boyfriend jeans
It was Katie Holmes, who inspired this look. Wearing denims so oversized that she had to turn them up at the bottom. "It looks like she's wearing Tom Cruise's jeans," mused a fashion insider. And so, the term 'boyfriend jeans' was coined. If you're after real authenticity, hit your local denim store and shop in the men's section. Look for a straight leg. Bootcut or flared
jeans aren't in the least bit flattering for this trend. Sport your boyfriend jeans with an overall feminine look. You can also pair it with a tight fitting tee or hoody while playing up the masculine role. If you choose to pair them with other masculine pieces, keep in mind to make them tight.
Tip: You have to show off your feminine features, otherwise you'll come off looking like a stoner.
The Gladiator sandals
A long time in the making, this trend has finally reached a stage of mass adoption. Since the trend was labelled as the 'must have' summer shoe of 2008, the Gladiator sandals have basically become a wardrobe staple; whether in flat or heeled form. You can choose from natural tones or bold colours or even metallic or croco leather ones; open strappy fronts or high leg boots, ankle length or going all the way up to your knees.
Tip: Whatever you choose, make sure you wear it with panache. The right pair will keep you cool all through the scorching summer months.
Emphasis on shoulders and sleeves
The importance of the changing sleeve and now the widening/wavering shoulder line has been growing over the past few years, with three quarter, elbow lengths, blouson or ruffle flounce frill effects. Now the clear development is toward puff, leg of mutton, batwing fullness and kimono drapery. Kimono sleeves are being seen everywhere- dresses, tops and coats. Kaftan silhouette tunics with easy batwing flowing sleeves, or dropped shoulder 1980s style tops and kimono sleeves are relaxed and easy to wear.
The newer dress styles favour more interesting one-shoulder detail, which was first seen on Michelle Obama. She wore a Jason Wu white Swarovski embellished evening gown for the Inauguration Evening Ball of the President of USA.
Tip: Off shoulder is passe. One shoulder tops, swimsuits and floor length maxi gowns are all a sign of the strength of this trend.
The jumpsuit
Spring 2009 sees a major fashion trend in the form of the jumpsuit or playsuit. Notably, at least one pair of new style pants is beginning to live side-by-side with the dresses in a
woman's wardrobe. Remember; do not put off jumpsuits after seeing a shapeless mass on the hanger in a store. These are garments, which need bodies to fill them, and heels that stride out, only then the jumpsuit will burst into life.
Within this line up of fashion jumpsuits for this season, you have the options of moving from full wide trousers to reigning in that fullness with cuffs; and toward the peg-top trouser/dhoti harem line with narrow tapering to the ankle. We like the fluid dhoti inspired ones, which go well with the trend of 'Grecian drapery' characterized by fluidity in fabric and form. A more fun version of the jumpsuit, which is basically cropped to make it shorter, is your playsuit. Pair it up with leggings, or without them to show off your bare legs and team it up with the gladiator sandals.
Tip: Don't forget to get rid of the celluloid on those legs and make the bronzer your new BFF for that tanned and toned look!
Monochromatic/Black and White
Black and white have always been a winning colour scheme, and this year it combines animal prints with Mondrian style colour blocking, popularized by world renowned designer, YSL. Monochromes are represented by slate grey, black, navy, hessian, cream and white. Look for monochrome effects based on zebra or giraffe prints with stripes and spots.
Tip: Don't forget to spruce up your look with bright accessories and neon accents otherwise you might end up looking like a jail bird on the run! This look also translates well into the nautical, yachting, maritime themes, which designers celebrate every year.
So what's stopping you from being a fashion diva this summer? Grab that suntan, sport the look that best defines you and step out into the sun, girl!
